How to Build an Effective Board Published by the American Society of Association Executives
ASAE’s summary: This book is fundamentally about leadership and tools for excellence in governance. Richard's descriptive models and principles make the typically complex concepts of leadership understandable and employable. The appendices include a treasure trove of practical tools to help you get started such as visions vs. mission exercises, ends vs. means exercises, board business exercises, a sample policy manual, and a sample board member survey. An important how-to resource for association leaders, staff executives and volunteers alike--this book can be used to benchmark your board's performance and plan for future challenges and opportunities. (1997, 200 pages, softcover)
Janet McCallen Richards may not have done any ground-breaking thinking in this book, but he sure pulled together the best of many different approaches to governance and integrated them in a way they could be implemented by most organizations. A handy primer and reference for anyone involved in associations.
